UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland is considering leaving the sport due to frustrations over fighter pay. Strickland, 35, recently expressed that his “heart isn’t in MMA anymore” and is contemplating a switch to boxing, specifically calling out Jake Paul.

Strickland’s discontent arises from a pay dispute with the UFC, highlighting the disparity in earnings compared to stars like Conor McGregor. He lamented that McGregor “makes 30 million [dollars] to fight for 30 seconds” while UFC fighters struggle to earn enough for retirement. Strickland openly admitted his body is “wrecked” after 21 years of training and injuries.

In a candid Instagram video, he stated:

• “Top fighters are forced to ruin their legacies to earn enough money.”
• “You realise the UFC happened. They just don't care anymore.”

Strickland, who secured his second middleweight title by dethroning Khamzat Chimaev in May, hinted at wanting to “speed run” through his UFC contract to pursue boxing. He indicated a preference for the sport, describing it as “easier and way more fun.” He even mentioned the possibility of fighting under the Zuffa Boxing banner, co-founded by UFC president Dana White, and hinted at moving up to 200lbs to challenge Jai Opetaia, the undefeated cruiserweight champion.

Strickland declared his ambition:

• “I wanna go put a f***ing boxing title on my mantle. I deserve it.”
• “If Jake Paul wants to give me a big old bag of money to fight him... I’ll go beat your cruiserweight champ, easy.”

In response, Paul welcomed the idea of a matchup, suggesting Strickland should contact MVP to discuss potential fights. Paul tweeted, “If you want your fair share call MVP when you are free.”

As negotiations loom, Strickland’s future in combat sports remains uncertain but filled with potential for a boxing crossover.
