The New York Liberty announced on Thursday that Satou Sabally will miss the rest of the season due to lingering effects from a concussion she sustained on June 23 against the Las Vegas Aces. This three-time All-Star has not played since then and had previously missed time due to a knee cyst. Sabally's absence raises significant concerns for the Liberty's playoff ambitions as they head into the final week of the regular season.

Despite the Liberty's hopes for her return, coach Chris DeMarco expressed uncertainty on August 13, stating, "We're really looking forward to getting her back..." However, with Sabally sidelined, the team must now compete without one of its key players. In her limited appearances this season, Sabally averaged 10.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in just 16.8 minutes.

Sabally's concussion issues are not new; she previously suffered a similar injury during the 2025 WNBA Finals while playing for the Phoenix Mercury. Her history of injuries, including Achilles, knee, and shoulder issues, has limited her to just 149 games out of a possible 258 since entering the league.

The Liberty's season has been disappointing despite their high expectations. After a promising 3-1 start, they currently sit in sixth place with a record of 24-16. Their title odds have plummeted to +1300 as they struggle in both offensive and defensive ratings.

Without Sabally, the Liberty have lacked the versatility and athleticism necessary to compete effectively against top teams. Their poor performance against playoff contenders, going 1-4 against the Minnesota Lynx and Golden State Valkyries, highlights the impact of her absence. With Sabally ruled out for the season, the Liberty's hopes for a championship run appear to have diminished significantly.
