In-form Sale full-back Joe Carpenter is set to face Harlequins this weekend, with aspirations of outshining George Furbank to secure a return to the England squad. Both players have had contrasting journeys recently, as Carpenter looks to capitalize on his strong start to the season, having beaten numerous defenders, second only to Immanuel Feyi-Waboso of Exeter in the opening rounds of the Premiership.

Furbank, previously England’s first-choice full-back, missed crucial matches due to appendicitis, while Carpenter has not featured for the national team since his debut in July 2025. Their matchup at Sale's Corpacq Stadium on Sunday becomes crucial, especially as Harlequins seek their first points after a tough start this season.

Carpenter acknowledged the personal rivalry with Furbank as a motivational factor, stating, "Those boys [Harlequins] have just come off the back of a pretty big loss and they'll be emotionally spiked come this weekend."

His impressive form, including a hat-trick against Bath in the Prem Cup, stems partly from his absence in the England setup, allowing him to engage in a full pre-season for the first time in years. Carpenter highlighted the benefits of this preparation, feeling fitter and stronger than ever.

England coaches have challenged him to enhance his decision-making and stamina, areas where he has shown improvement in fitness testing. He noted, "Beating defenders is a massive part of my game... It is putting me in better positions and giving me more opportunities."

Reflecting on his previous season's disappointing seventh-place finish, Carpenter considered his decision to re-sign with Sale, ultimately feeling optimistic about the club's direction under coach Alex Sanderson and new signings like former England captain Courtney Lawes. Carpenter concluded, "I think it would have been very silly to leave."
