Summary

Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva faces another setback as she has been denied permission to compete internationally. This decision follows a second review after her neutral status was revoked by the International Skating Union (ISU).

On Thursday, the ISU confirmed that Valieva was among four Russian Olympians from 2022 who did not meet the requirements to participate as Individual Neutral Athletes. The other athletes affected include men's skater Mark Kondratiuk and the ice dance duo of Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin. The ISU did not provide specific reasons for the rejections.

The federation stated:

"The ISU will not comment further on individual cases while any applicable appeal rights remain available."

This latest obstacle comes more than four years after the scandal surrounding Valieva’s positive doping test during the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. Valieva and her fellow skaters have three weeks to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Neither Valieva nor the Russian figure skating federation has commented immediately.

The ISU has allowed more Russian athletes to compete as neutral participants this season, following an initial ban after the invasion of Ukraine. The current policy presumes eligibility unless disqualifying criteria are met.

Notably, neutral status can be denied if athletes are involved in military operations against Ukraine or have publicly supported the war since 2022.

In a separate legal matter, Valieva is pursuing action regarding the procedure of her doping ban, which concluded late last year. A document from the European Court of Human Rights indicates that she has filed a claim against Switzerland over a ruling that rejected her attempt to overturn her suspension. Her legal team argues that the Swiss court failed to evaluate new evidence in her favor, referencing a September 2024 article alleging that the World Anti-Doping Agency suppressed crucial evidence.
