Rory McIlroy shifts his focus to challenging Patrick Reed for the Race to Dubai title after a frustrating near-victory at the BMW PGA Championship. McIlroy entered the final round two strokes behind the leader but managed to momentarily tie for the lead, only to stumble at the finish.

In a dramatic conclusion at Wentworth, McIlroy posted a final-round score of 68, finishing tied for second at 15 under, two strokes behind winner JJ Spaun. This marks McIlroy's fourth runner-up finish at this prestigious event since his last win in 2014.

McIlroy expressed his disappointment, stating, "I had my chances out there! I felt like I hit the ball really well - probably the best I've hit it all week." Despite several opportunities to score, including on holes two through 13 and the final hole, McIlroy struggled with his putting, echoing similar concerns from the previous week’s Amgen Irish Open.

His performance earned him 532 Race to Dubai points, bringing him within 308 points of Reed, who withdrew due to injury. McIlroy aims to reclaim the top spot in the standings, having previously topped the Order of Merit for four consecutive seasons, which could tie him with Colin Montgomerie for the all-time record of eight Race to Dubai titles.

With upcoming events including the DP World India Championship from October 15-18, McIlroy remains optimistic about finishing the season strong. He emphasized the importance of Reed's health for a competitive race, stating, "I would obviously love to do it [win the Race to Dubai]."

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley noted McIlroy's missed opportunities, highlighting his improvement in putting over the years but acknowledging that he seemed to struggle during the tournament. McIlroy will continue to refine his game as he looks forward to the season's final stretch.
