Rory McIlroy faces a pivotal moment in his career, as former golfer Rob Lee emphasizes the Northern Irishman’s need to evaluate his desire to reclaim the world No 1 spot while balancing personal commitments. McIlroy recently finished in a seven-way tie for fourth at the FedEx Cup, five shots behind tournament winner Scottie Scheffler, despite showing initial promise.

At 37, McIlroy, a six-time major winner, acknowledged that his competitive spirit isn't what it used to be, admitting, "my fuse was shorter than it used to be" before the final round at East Lake Golf Club. Lee noted that McIlroy's body language appeared off, suggesting underlying issues affecting his game.

Lee remarked:

Rory's in this position after 20 years at the top. He realizes there are other things in life. His conundrum is how much can he pare back his schedule while still performing at peak levels.

Despite recent struggles, Lee believes McIlroy can still win more majors but warns that success comes at the cost of family time. McIlroy recently took a break to focus on family before competing in three consecutive events.

Sean Zak added that changes to the PGA Tour schedule might help McIlroy balance his commitments better. He advised McIlroy to set a goal of surpassing Scheffler to rekindle his motivation. Zak stated, "Rory needs to think about what truly matters to him."
