Rory McIlroy surged into contention at the Tour Championship with an impressive seven-under-par 63, though Viktor Hovland maintained a solid lead at East Lake. McIlroy, who started the day seven shots behind joint leaders Hovland and Ryan Gerard, faced an early setback with a three-putt on the 191-yard par-three second hole.

Despite this, McIlroy quickly regained momentum, birdying four of the next five holes and adding two more birdies on the 10th and 12th, with only one bogey interrupting his flow. He briefly tied for the lead at 10-under-par after three consecutive birdies from the 15th, but a rough finish on the final hole prevented a spectacular end.

Currently, McIlroy sits five shots behind Hovland, who shot a solid 65, and four behind Gerard, who carded a 66. Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy noted the improvement in his putting:

I think the difference today was I just putted a bit better. I still felt like I played OK the last couple of days, just wasn’t getting as much out of my game as I wanted to. I pieced it together today and ended up obviously with a better score.

As the final round of the PGA Tour season approaches, McIlroy expressed his desire to finish strong, stating, "It will be nice to go out and give it a really good run tomorrow."

Hovland, on the other hand, remains focused on clinching the $10 million prize, finishing the day with four birdies in his last six holes. He expressed satisfaction with his performance:

I mean, 65 out there, especially with that finish, super happy with that. It’s been just one of those weeks where I’ve been able to put it together every single day for three days.

Additionally, Scottie Scheffler is among four players trailing Hovland by three shots, having carded a bogey-free 66 on Saturday.
