Supporting Rochdale has been a rollercoaster ride, especially over the past fortnight. However, their return to the Football League is now confirmed following a dramatic playoff final against Boreham Wood.

In a match filled with tension, hopes seemed dashed when Boreham Wood led 2-0 with only 12 minutes remaining. Yet, Mani Dieseruvwe scored a 97th-minute equaliser, sending the game into extra time and ultimately to penalties.

Oliver Whatmuff, an 18-year-old goalkeeper on loan from Manchester City, emerged as the hero by saving two penalties, leading Rochdale to a 3-1 shootout victory after 120 minutes ended in a tie.

The previous fortnight had already tested Rochdale's resilience. Just eight days before, they suffered a gut-wrenching defeat against York, which seemed to take a toll on the squad. Despite this setback, manager Jimmy McNulty praised the team's character and determination, stating, "It does feel like some sort of footballing justice was served today."

Conversely, the defeat was devastating for Boreham Wood, whose manager Luke Garrard expressed his heartbreak after coming so close to promotion. He lamented, "I thought I liked Wembley, but I’m not a fan of it."

Throughout the match, Boreham Wood appeared dominant, taking the lead through goals from Matt Rush and a second by Abdul Abdulmalik. However, Rochdale's late resurgence showcased their fighting spirit, culminating in a thrilling penalty shootout that secured their place back in League Two after a tumultuous period for the club.
