Roberto Mancini kicked off his second term as Italy manager by expressing remorse for his previous switch to Saudi Arabia and committing to restoring the nation's footballing glory. With Italy missing the last three World Cups and failing to secure a major title since winning Euro 2020, Mancini acknowledges the uphill battle ahead.

Previously at the helm from 2018 to 2023, Mancini led Italy through an impressive unbeaten streak of 37 matches, a record recently eclipsed by Spain. However, his unexpected departure to Saudi Arabia in 2023 came shortly after he was entrusted with additional responsibilities for the Italian Under-21 and Under-20 teams.

Now back, Mancini is focused on winning back the fans' trust. He stated, "We signed a four-year contract, and I hope I can win an important trophy, or even two, and then stay on beyond that as well, if possible." His goal is to create a team that captivates the fans and earns their forgiveness for his earlier decisions.

Mancini believes in the potential of Italian talent and urges clubs to invest in youth development. His return follows the unsuccessful appointment of Andrea Pirlo, which led to the resignation of key figures such as Paolo Maldini and Leonardo from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).

Alongside Mancini, FIGC President Giovanni Malago appointed Claudio Ranieri as technical director to enhance football operations across national teams. Mancini's priorities include rekindling fan support and ensuring future generations, like his 12-year-old grandson who has never seen Italy at a World Cup, experience the tournament.

Mancini's first test as manager will be a Nations League match against Belgium on 25 September in Rome, followed by a game against Turkey on 5 October in Bologna. He recognizes the challenges ahead but remains optimistic about the team's potential.
