Former Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski is nearing a transfer to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire. The 37-year-old Poland international left La Liga after his contract expired at the end of the season and is expected to sign a two-year deal in Chicago.

Last December, Chicago Fire expressed interest in Lewandowski, engaging in talks regarding a potential move. He has been on their 'discovery list', which prevents other MLS clubs from signing him without compensation. Ongoing dialogue between both parties has kept the possibility alive.

In addition to Chicago Fire, there was interest from AC Milan and clubs in the Saudi Pro League for Poland's record goalscorer, who is anticipated to become one of the highest earners in MLS.

Lewandowski's arrival would significantly benefit Chicago Fire, particularly given the city's large Polish community. Currently, the Fire sit third in the MLS Eastern Conference, having made their first playoff appearance last season. They are set to return to action on Friday, July 17, against Vancouver after the World Cup break.

The striker boasts an impressive career, spending 12 seasons in Germany's Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, where he secured 10 league titles and led Bayern to the 2020 Champions League title. He was a frontrunner for the 2020 Ballon d'Or, which was not awarded that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and finished second in 2021. Lewandowski won the Best FIFA Men's Player Award in 2020 and 2021.

Following his move to Barcelona in 2022, he helped the team win three La Liga titles and the 2025 Copa del Rey, scoring 120 goals in 193 games. However, injuries limited him to just 17 league starts last season. Since his departure, Barcelona has signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for over €80 million (£69.3 million) and is considering a move for Marcus Rashford, who was on loan from Manchester United last season. Reports also indicate interest in England striker Harry Kane, who is in the final year of his contract with Bayern Munich.
