Richard Masters and Howard Webb, two influential figures in English football, expressed their discontent with FIFA regarding the controversial decision that allowed USA striker Folarin Balogun to continue playing in the 2026 World Cup despite receiving a red card that should have resulted in an automatic suspension.

Balogun's dismissal occurred during the last 32 match against Bosnia & Herzegovina, which, under World Cup regulations, mandated an immediate ban without the possibility of appeal. However, following a complaint from US President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the ban was controversially lifted, enabling Balogun to participate in the last 16 match against Belgium.

Webb articulated his concerns:

• He was troubled by the pressure exerted on FIFA.
• He acknowledged the legitimacy of the red card but criticized the unusual process that led to its suspension.

Masters echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the focus should be on the football played during the tournament rather than controversies like Balogun's. He lamented the overshadowing of memorable moments, such as Spain’s triumph and England’s semi-final journey.

Masters also questioned why FIFA lacks a red card review system similar to that in various leagues, including the Premier League, which could address potential miscarriages of justice.

Both leaders expressed hope that this incident would not erode trust in referees or the disciplinary processes in the Premier League, asserting that the competition remains legitimate and honest despite ongoing controversies.
