The Kansas City Chiefs faced a challenging 2024 season, missing the playoffs for the first time in Patrick Mahomes' career after nine consecutive AFC West titles. However, the 2025 season has seen a resurgence, with the team looking formidable once again after four weeks of the regular season.

Key players like tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones remain, but it's the infusion of new talent, particularly a strong rookie defensive class, that has revitalized the team. Kenneth Walker III, the prized free agent running back acquisition, leads the NFL in rushing yards with 537, providing a much-needed boost to the Chiefs' offense.

Defensive Improvements

The Chiefs have significantly revamped their defense, with about 35% of defensive snaps played by new players this season. Key statistics include:

• Defensive EPA per play at 0.04, the best since their Super Bowl win in 2024.
• Projected 259 pressures, marking the highest total in a decade.

Despite generating pressure, the Chiefs have recorded only four sacks, tied for the second-lowest in the league. Improved performances from players like Felix Anudike-Uzomah and George Karlaftis, alongside rookies R Mason Thomas and Peter Woods, have been instrumental.

In the secondary, the Chiefs drafted LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane at No. 6 overall and brought back cornerback L'Jarius Sneed. Although inexperienced, Delane and second-year corner Nohl Williams are showing promise, helping the team achieve the fourth-lowest passer rating against them this season.

Offensive Dynamics

While the passing game struggles due to injuries, establishing a solid run game has diversified the Chiefs' offensive strategy. Alongside Mahomes, the team's primary receiving options include Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy, with Jalen Royal providing limited contributions. The offensive line, particularly undrafted free-agent left tackle Kahlil Benson, continues to face challenges.

The Chiefs' strategic redistributions of resources are paying off, showing potential to reclaim their status as Super Bowl contenders.
