A Familiar Flashpoint

Real Madrid TV’s referee breakdowns became a point of contention in 2024, particularly when Sevilla filed a formal complaint ahead of a league match at the Bernabéu. Sevilla accused the videos of constituting a campaign of persecution and harassment against the officials, prompting an investigation by the Spanish Football Federation, according to ESPN.

Luis Medina Cantalejo, chief of Spain’s refereeing body, criticized the practice on COPE radio, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta labeled the videos as shameful, urging the RFEF to take action.

The situation escalated in February when Real Madrid dropped seven points over three La Liga matches. Following the Espanyol match, the club contacted the RFEF and Spain’s Sports Ministry regarding the decision not to dismiss an Espanyol player and later acquired access to audio recordings between the on-field referee and VAR. LaLiga president Javier Tebas accused the club of fostering a narrative of victimhood.
