The British Horseracing Authority has seen a rapid turnover with seven prime ministers in ten years, a churn rate that reflects the political instability impacting the sport. As the search for Lord Charles Allen’s successor continues after his brief tenure ended in March, David Jones remains the figurehead during the early days of Andy Burnham’s administration.

Burnham, who was born near Becher’s Brook, has only attended the races once, during the Grand National meeting this year. He confessed, "I feel a bit ashamed" about his late introduction to the sport, highlighting a disconnect that might affect racing's visibility in his administration.

One of the primary concerns for racing is the continuation of Lisa Nandy as culture secretary, whose tenure has included significant issues such as:

• The successful “Axe The Racing Tax” campaign against online betting duties.
• The introduction of affordability checks for gamblers, which could potentially cost racing millions in revenue.

With Nandy's position confirmed, racing hopes for her to advocate for transparency as these checks roll out. If the implementation proves cumbersome, swift action may be necessary to safeguard the sport’s interests.

Burnham's stance on gambling could significantly impact the industry. As Manchester's mayor, he co-signed a letter advocating for local authorities to control the spread of gambling establishments and has supported the campaign Against The Odds, which seeks to phase out gambling sponsorship in sports. A ban that excludes horse racing could devastate the industry, jeopardizing millions in sponsorship and broadcasting rights.

While a blanket ban could harm the betting sector, the debate over gambling sponsorship remains complex. Racing's long-term interests may necessitate a clear distinction between betting on sports and casino gaming, which has higher associations with problem gambling.
