Qinwen Zheng has made headlines at the US Open with an incredible comeback, defeating six-time grand slam champion Iga Swiatek to reach the quarter-finals. Zheng, who had to qualify for the tournament, showcased her resilience by coming back from a daunting 0-5 deficit in the first set, marking her second consecutive match with such a remarkable turnaround.

In her previous match, Zheng faced Madison Keys, where she also trailed 0-5 and was match point down in the third set. However, she rallied to win the match 1-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5. Just two days later, she repeated her heroics against the eighth seed Swiatek, taking the first set 7-5 after winning seven games in a row and then clinching the second set 6-3 to secure the victory.

After converting her fourth match point, Zheng fell onto her back in celebration. This victory marks her seventh consecutive win in New York, a significant achievement considering she missed much of the 2025 season due to an elbow injury and had dropped to No 121 in the rankings.

In her post-match comments, Zheng reflected on her performance, stating:

I started the match not so well... little by little I found my rhythm. I guess to come back from 0-5 yesterday is not luck.

For Swiatek, the loss was heartbreaking, leaving her in tears as she struggled with her game, accumulating 28 errors throughout the match. This defeat continues a troubling trend for the former Wimbledon champion, as she has exited the last five grand slams in straight sets since her 2025 Wimbledon victory.

Zheng is set to face either second seed Elena Rybakina or two-time US Open champion Naomi Osaka in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, Mirra Andreeva also made headlines with her own comeback, defeating Anastasia Potapova to reach her first US Open quarter-final.
