This initiative, dubbed Project Magic, aims to reshape the financial landscape of rugby league in the UK.

• The 14 Super League clubs will deliberate on the Project Magic document during a meeting on Tuesday.
• Nigel Wood, RFL chief executive, circulated this document prior to the clubs' rejection of the NRL’s initial proposal.
• The NRL's previous offer included a £7m-a-year investment for five years in exchange for a 10% stake in Super League.

Instead of relinquishing a stake, the RFL’s vision reflects a desire to secure a £50m payment-in-kind loan to fund central growth initiatives aimed at global expansion. Notably, this £50m would remain under RFL control rather than being distributed to the clubs, which may lead to disagreements among stakeholders.

The document outlines an ambitious 10-year plan, targeting:

• Expansion of Super League to 18 or 20 clubs.
• Launch of a joint direct-to-consumer streaming platform with the NRL.
• Establishment of a fully professional women’s competition.

The proposed investment allocation includes:

• £13.5m for enhancing commercial capabilities.
• £10m directed towards player pathways.
• £5m for broadcasting services.

While larger clubs like Wigan and Warrington favor a partnership with the NRL, smaller clubs, such as Wakefield, voice concerns about being left behind. The RFL's push for a 50% increase in funding complicates discussions, as many clubs seem to prefer a direct cash injection over a centrally managed loan.

NRL sources have indicated a “take it or leave it” stance, raising doubts about their willingness to provide the requested loan. Furthermore, the NRL's demand for governance reforms, including the establishment of an independent commission, poses additional challenges for the deal's completion.
