Galatasaray is reportedly planning an ambitious move for Virgil van Dijk, with Ilkay Gundogan potentially playing a crucial role in persuading the Liverpool captain to transition to Istanbul.

With Van Dijk’s contract at Anfield set to expire at the end of the season, discussions surrounding his future have intensified. Liverpool has yet to determine whether they will offer the 35-year-old a new deal, prompting Galatasaray to explore the situation further.

For the Turkish champions, securing Van Dijk would represent a significant statement signing. Conversely, for Liverpool, the uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk's future serves as a reminder that interest in him will only escalate the longer the situation remains unresolved.

Key points regarding the potential move include:

• Galatasaray has identified Van Dijk as a primary defensive target.
• Gundogan could facilitate negotiations due to their shared agency, ROOF, and Gundogan’s uncle’s involvement with the firm.
• Van Dijk has previously expressed admiration for the atmosphere at Rams Park after encountering Galatasaray there with Liverpool.
• A deal could be feasible for under €10 million if Liverpool opts against extending his contract.

The stakes are high for Liverpool, as Van Dijk is not just another seasoned defender; he is the team’s captain and a vital leader in their defense. With his 36th birthday approaching next summer, Liverpool faces a critical decision regarding a potential new contract.

This interest from Galatasaray is not entirely new, with reports surfacing earlier this year about the Turkish club's outreach regarding a potential transfer. Former Galatasaray star Wesley Sneijder has even encouraged Van Dijk, stating, "If you are thinking of leaving Liverpool, don’t hesitate, go to Galatasaray."

As it stands, Liverpool holds the reins in this situation. However, if they do not address Van Dijk’s future soon, Galatasaray may not be the only club expressing interest.
