The Prem Rugby play-offs are shifting to a neutral venue format starting from the 2029-2030 season. This change ends a longstanding tradition where the top two teams in the regular season enjoyed home advantage during semi-finals, a practice that has been in place since 2005.

League officials envision hosting both semi-finals on consecutive days in a single city, drawing inspiration from the successful European finals weekend format. Cities like Liverpool and Brighton are reportedly under consideration as potential hosts.

This season's play-offs showcased thrilling matches at Northampton's Franklin's Gardens and the Rec in Bath, both of which boasted sold-out crowds. However, with these venues only accommodating around 15,000 fans, Prem Rugby chief executive Simon Massie-Taylor sees a chance to enhance both the commercial and sporting aspects of the league by moving to larger stadiums. For instance, France's Top 14 semi-finals were held at Marseille's Stade Velodrome, which can hold over 67,000 spectators.

Massie-Taylor highlighted the success of the recent semi-finals, noting they were sell-out events with enthusiastic home crowds. He believes larger venues could attract even more fans, including neutrals, thus enhancing the overall experience.

Reactions from club insiders regarding this proposal have been mixed. Some express excitement about the potential for increased attendance in a major city, while others raise concerns about the financial implications of losing home advantage. Currently, clubs earn between £600,000-£750,000 for hosting play-offs, so substantial revenue from neutral venues would be essential for viability. Additionally, there are worries that without a tangible benefit for finishing first in the regular season, clubs might lack motivation towards the end of the season.

To address these concerns, one suggestion involves rewarding top-performing teams with prize money or a larger share of the play-off gate receipts. Furthermore, relocating the play-offs could help expand the league's reach into underserved regions, balancing the need to tap into new markets while engaging established fan bases.
