Feyi-Waboso is on the mend from surgery for a facial fracture he sustained during Chiefs' victory over Leicester at the end of May. Meanwhile, Mitchell has been recovering from a hamstring strain incurred while participating in an England training camp the previous week. Both players were initially deemed unlikely to return for the domestic season, but England head coach Steve Borthwick confirmed their progress.

Borthwick stated, "They are at their clubs trying to be fit for the game this weekend." He emphasized the collaborative approach with medical specialists regarding Feyi-Waboso’s recovery, indicating a hopeful return if his preparation goes well. For Mitchell, Phil Morrow, England's head of performance, observed his training just days ago, and if he meets the necessary fitness markers, he could be back in action for Northampton Saints.

The enhanced elite player squad contracts introduced in 2024 have given England the final say on player treatment and match readiness, a decision that has historically led to tension between club and country medical teams.

Phil Dowson, Northampton's director of rugby, expressed his frustration over Mitchell’s injury situation, which arose during a training alignment camp, echoing a similar injury from the Six Nations.

Borthwick remains focused on ensuring his players compete in significant matches, stating, "I want players to play in big games; games where there are trophies on the line... That's the best preparation for Test match rugby."

Both players' returns are crucial; Feyi-Waboso's presence is needed following Campbell Ridl's injury in the semi-final against Bath, while Mitchell’s experience could provide essential support as Archie McParland has stepped up in his absence.
