A shocking incident at the Powerlifting Championships in Lithuania has led to an investigation into spotter Ernestas Kusinas, who openly admitted to sabotaging Sonita Muluh’s record attempt due to his racist beliefs. The event took place in June, where Muluh attempted to squat 334.5 kg. Kusinas was filmed placing his knee under the barbell during her attempt, which invalidated her lift as spotters must not interfere if the athlete can lift the weight unassisted.

Following the incident, Kusinas responded to accusations on social media, stating, "I am a racist, and I did it intentionally, because I hate you pieces of s***." This outrageous admission prompted the Lithuanian Powerlifting Federation to impose a lifetime ban on Kusinas and refer the matter to law enforcement, where he could face up to two years in prison.

In an interview with Reuters, Kusinas claimed his comment was made in anger and intended as mockery, not a confession. He also suggested fatigue led to his interference with Muluh’s attempt.

Muluh, of Cameroonian descent, expressed her initial belief that Kusinas made a human error, stating, "He did not reach out afterwards to apologise... I didn't lash out; didn't curse at him." However, she later criticized the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) for failing to ensure the safety of athletes, emphasizing the need for background checks on spotters.

The IPF condemned Kusinas’ actions, asserting that racism and discrimination have no place in the sport and commended the Lithuanian federation's swift response. They pledged to enhance screening and oversight for volunteers at IPF events.
