The game scheduled for Friday night at Progressive Field in Cleveland between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Guardians has been postponed due to poor air quality. This decision was announced by the Guardians, with the unfavorable conditions resulting from smoke drifting south from wildfires in Canada and northern Minnesota.

This was the only game postponed on Friday night, even as the upper Midwest and eastern regions experienced the effects of the smoke. The air quality index in Cleveland reached 203 at the time of the announcement, indicating a "very unhealthy" level, as reported by the Associated Press.

Guardians manager Stephen Vogt emphasized the importance of safety, stating:

We want to be safe for our players. We want to make sure that it's not too smoky and obviously for the fans as well. It's just not safe to be out in that environment if it's not playable.

In response to the conditions, the MLB adjusted the schedule for other games, moving the Phillies vs. Mets game in Philadelphia up an hour to accommodate the smoke. For the Pittsburgh-Cleveland series, plans are set for a split doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game starting at 1:10 p.m. ET and the second at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Currently, the Guardians (51-46) are on a four-game winning streak and are tied for first place in the AL Central with the Chicago White Sox (50-45). The Pirates (50-47) sit two games back of the third wild card spot in the National League.
