The Philadelphia Phillies face a managerial decision following Alex Cora's withdrawal from consideration for the position. Cora, who has opted to take a year off to spend time with family, leaves the Phillies in search of a new leader after the dismissal of Rob Thomson.

Dave Dombrowski, the Phillies' lead executive, had initially reached out to Cora back in April. With Cora now out of the picture, Dombrowski must weigh the option of retaining Don Mattingly, who stepped in as interim manager and led the team to a 79-55 record and a wild-card berth, against potential external candidates.

Potential Candidates for the Managerial Role:

• Don Mattingly: The interim manager has established relationships with players, which could be crucial given the looming MLB lockout and a potentially shortened spring training.

• Rocco Baldelli: The former manager of the Minnesota Twins, Baldelli brings postseason experience and strong communication skills, currently serving as a special assistant with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

• David Ross: Recently released by the Chicago Cubs, Ross is eager to return to managing. His background as a catcher could appeal to the Phillies as they seek a new leader.

• Rodney Linares: Currently the bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays, Linares has a rich coaching history and has managed the Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

• George Lombard Sr.: With experience as a former player and coaching roles in the Detroit Tigers and Dodgers, Lombard has a solid foundation for potential managerial success.

• Carlos Beltrán: Despite a brief managerial stint with the New York Mets marred by controversy, Beltrán remains a strong candidate, currently serving in the Mets' front office.

As the Phillies navigate this critical offseason, the decision on their managerial direction will be pivotal for the team's future.
