The PGA Tour is set to undergo a significant transformation starting in the 2028 season, introducing a two-tier series format featuring promotion and relegation. This major structural overhaul aims to enhance competition and player engagement.

The top-tier competition will be named the PGA Tour Championship Series, where elite players will compete in 23-24 events annually from approximately February to August. This will run alongside the PGA Tour Challenger Series, which will allow for movement between the two tiers each season.

Key features of the Championship Series include:

• 120-player fields
• 72 holes with a 36-hole cut
• $20 million purses, similar to current Signature Events
• 15 regular-season events plus the Players Championship, four majors, and the Tour Championship

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy praised the announcement, emphasizing its positive impact on professional golf and the importance of meritocracy. Tiger Woods, who led the Future Competition Committee, expressed pride in the new structure, aiming to benefit future generations of players and fans.

The PGA Tour Challenger Series will serve as the pathway to the Championship Series, featuring 20 events on traditional courses, with 144-player fields and minimum purses of $4 million.

Brian Rolapp, PGA Tour CEO, stated that this new model responds to fans' desires for more competitive play and dramatic season finishes. The promotion and relegation system is designed to create a true meritocracy, with the top 90 players in the Championship Series retaining their status for the following season, while the top 20 from the Challenger Series can advance.
