Back-to-back Masters champion Rory McIlroy has expressed strong support for the PGA Tour's new matchplay format set to debut in 2028. This significant change, confirmed by PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp, will see the Tour Championship played over two weeks at two different courses, marking the return of matchplay for the first time since 2023.

McIlroy, currently ranked world number two and a three-time FedEx Cup winner, believes this initiative shows that the PGA Tour is responding to fan desires. He stated, "I think the PGA Tour and the Future Competition Committee and Brian and everyone involved have really taken on board what the fans have been calling for and have wanted, which is matchplay."

The revamped play-off structure aims to enhance fan engagement, a point McIlroy emphasized:

• The current play-offs consist of a three-event strokeplay series.
• The upcoming Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta features a lucrative $40 million purse.
• Despite financial success, fan engagement has been a consistent concern.

McIlroy noted, "I think they've been great for players. Obviously we play for a ton of money, and it's sort of like the culmination of the entire season. The players have been rewarded."

He appreciates the Tour's efforts to incorporate fan feedback, stating, "I think this idea of matchplay over two weeks is something that came mostly from what the people that watch golf wanted, so I think that's a really good thing." This bold move could reshape the future of golf's postseason, making it more exciting and engaging for fans.
