Paul Casey faced a heartbreaking defeat in his quest to end a five-year title drought at the Omega European Masters held at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club. Thriston Lawrence emerged victorious in a thrilling play-off after Casey pledged to donate all his prize money to a charity supporting victims of a tragic fire in the area.

The fire, which occurred on New Year’s Day, resulted in 41 fatalities and left 115 others injured. Following a strong third round where Casey held a three-stroke lead, the 49-year-old committed to donating his winnings to the Fondation Beloved.

Casey expressed his emotional connection to Switzerland, stating, "I love this place. I really do, so it was a wonderful day... It would mean an awful lot [to win]." He added, "I’ll make sure that all my prize money is going to the charity and the victims of the fire here in Crans-Montana. So I’ve got a lot to play for."

Despite leading at the start of the final round, Casey struggled, allowing Lawrence to catch up. Lawrence, starting the day six shots behind, delivered a remarkable bogey-free 62, setting the clubhouse target at 18-under. Casey briefly regained the lead but ultimately bogeyed the 72nd hole, leading to a play-off.

The play-off saw both players par the first three holes before Lawrence sank a long birdie putt, marking his third victory at the Swiss event, joining the legendary Seve Ballesteros in this achievement.

“This is probably the most emotional [I’ve been on a golf course],” Lawrence said. "I feel for Paul; he played great golf. It’s just the best feeling in the world."

The charity will receive €354,734 (£304,805) from Casey's runner-up finish, ensuring his pledge has a significant impact.
