Patrick Mahomes remains a question mark for the Kansas City Chiefs as they gear up to face the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football in Week 1. Despite participating in all of training camp, Mahomes has yet to receive medical clearance to play following a serious knee injury last December.

Initially, Mahomes tore his ACL and LCL, leading to surgery the next day. While he was cleared for passing drills in the spring and able to practice fully by late July, the Chiefs' medical staff still hasn't given the go-ahead for game action. Head coach Andy Reid expressed caution, stating, "I'm literally taking it day by day. No predictions here on anything."

With just 18 days remaining until the opener, Mahomes' status appears precarious. He will miss the Chiefs' final preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, marking the first time in his career he won’t take any preseason snaps. Reid hinted at the situation, saying Mahomes was "probably not cleared enough" to play.

Mahomes himself remains optimistic, having targeted a Week 1 return since his surgery. He stated, "It's nine months, it's the amount of time [doctors] said... I want to go out and get it."

Despite his eagerness, he acknowledged the difference between practice and game readiness, noting, "I haven't played in the game and been able to get hit."

If he's not cleared, Justin Fields will take the helm for Kansas City. The Chiefs must weigh the risks of rushing Mahomes back, especially with a tight schedule that includes two games in six days. His impressive recovery timeline contrasts sharply with Micah Parsons, who suffered a similar injury and won't return until Week 6.

As the season approaches, all eyes remain on Mahomes and the Chiefs' decision-making regarding his participation.
