The inaugural London P1 professional padel tournament wrapped up on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone for the sport in Great Britain. Despite the early exit of home favourite Christian Medina Murphy, the event showcased the growing interest in padel, attracting over one million participants nationwide.

Medina Murphy, alongside his Spanish partner Alberto Garcia Jimenez, thrilled the crowd at Olympia with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Agustin Gutierrez and Santino Giuliani on the opening day. However, their journey ended in the last-32 against Juan Tello and Maxi Arce, the 10th seeds, though they left a lasting impression on the enthusiastic audience.

Luke Lloyd-Davies, chief growth officer of Sela, expressed optimism for the sport's future, comparing British players' potential to icons like Tim Henman and Andy Murray. He emphasized the importance of nurturing local talent in collaboration with the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), stating:

• “The more we can get people coming through, with help from the LTA, that would be brilliant.”
• “We want to expand and invest in the sport so it makes sense to invest in the (British) talent.”

As tickets sold out rapidly for the final four days, the atmosphere at the refurbished Kensington venue remained vibrant, featuring public practice areas and family-friendly activities, including face painting and DJ music provided by Red Bull.

Looking ahead, Lloyd-Davies hinted at future enhancements, ensuring that the excitement around padel continues to build in the UK. “There will be markers in the sand to come out of this,” he concluded, signaling a bright path forward for the sport.
