The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced a groundbreaking initiative, providing a grant of $10,000 (£7,600) for every future Olympian participating in the Games. This 'fit for the future Olympian grant' aims to support athletes in their sporting careers or during their transitions.

A total fund of $140 million (£106.5 million) will be allocated for each Olympic Games, with athletes from the 2022 Winter Olympics being the first eligible to apply. Approximately 14,000 Olympians per Games are expected to qualify for this financial support.

Key details of the grant include:

• Eligibility: Open to athletes without anti-doping violations or breaches of the IOC code of ethics.
• Administration: Distributed through existing National Olympic Committee (NOC) structures without affecting current IOC support programs.
• Exclusions: Not available for athletes competing in the Youth Olympic Games.

Pau Gasol, a three-time basketball medalist and chair of the IOC's athletes' commission, emphasized the importance of recognizing the dedication and sacrifices made by Olympians. He stated, "This is not prize money. This is about recognising the journey and the commitment it takes to become an Olympian."

While the IOC president Kirsty Coventry opposes Olympic prize money, she acknowledges the need for innovative support for athletes. The application process for 2026 Olympians is expected to open by the end of this year, with the first payments scheduled for 2027.
