The UK government is actively engaging in discussions about supporting potential bids for the Olympics and Paralympics in the 2040s. This initiative marks the first consideration of hosting the Games since London 2012 and involves assessing crucial factors such as cost, socio-economic benefits, and the chance of success.

Ministers are also contemplating bids for golf's Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup in the 2030s. The last occurrences of these prestigious events in the UK were in 2014 and 2019, respectively, at Gleneagles in Scotland.

In recent months, there has been a surge of interest in bringing the Olympics back to the UK for a fourth time. Notably, London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed a desire for the city to bid for the 2040 Games.

With Los Angeles and Brisbane set to host the 2028 and 2032 Games, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has yet to announce host cities for 2036 and beyond. In December, the chair of UK Sport emphasized that a bid "has to be an aspiration," suggesting that Liverpool and Manchester could potentially co-host.

In February, political leaders advocated for a bid based in northern England, citing a "compelling" case for the region to host the event.

The Ryder Cup, featuring 24 of the top players from Europe and the USA, occurs every two years, alternating between the two continents. Bolton is currently bidding to host the 2035 Ryder Cup, aiming to bring the event back to England for the first time in over 30 years.

Furthermore, England Golf has called on the government to support its bid for the Solheim Cup, which would be held in the UK for the first time.

As part of a new 'sporting events framework', the government plans to criminalize the unauthorized resale of tickets for major sporting events, such as Euro 2028, to facilitate the successful bidding and delivery of these events. The UK is also the sole bidder for the 2035 Women's World Cup, with England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland co-hosting Euro 2028.
