Olav Kooij, riding for Decathlon CMA CGM, claimed victory in stage five of the 2026 Tour de France, held in Pau. The stage marked the first sprint finish of this year's competition, with Kooij finishing ahead of Max Kanter from XDA Astana.

Kooij expressed his excitement, stating, "After a couple [of] hard days already, we had to wait to today to get this first chance to sprint in the Tour, and to immediately win is unbelievable. It means quite a lot. I had a pretty tough spring, and I think just to get back to this level and to keep believing in yourself – and just a few people who believe in you as well – is all you need."

The stage was notable for its intensity, with several crashes affecting race leader Torsten Træen, although he maintained his overall lead. The afternoon was characterized by extreme heat, requiring riders to use ice vests and helmets to cool down.

In a notable effort, Baptiste Veistroffer was the only aggressor, attempting a long solo break that lasted nearly 140 km before being caught by the peloton after the day’s only climb, the Cote de Baleix.

Looking ahead, Remco Evenepoel, the Olympic road race champion, prepares for the challenging Tourmalet climb on Thursday, a site of his previous abandonment in 2025. Although he has lost weight in preparation and is considered a strong contender, he has not garnered the same attention as teammates Paul Seixas and Isaac del Toro.

Evenepoel leads Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe alongside teammate Florian Lipowitz, both vying for podium spots. Team manager Ralph Denk confirmed their equal footing in competition, stating, "Remco is still the team leader and Florian Lipowitz is a bit of the second man but in terms of sporting performance, they are on equal footing."

With Træen in the yellow jersey, the stage is set for an exciting showdown, especially if Tadej Pogacar decides to make a bold move on the 17 km Tourmalet ascent.
