In a striking departure from typical World Cup festivities, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended a watch party held at Rikers Island correctional facility. This unusual event drew over 100 inmates, who gathered in a gymnasium to watch the semifinal match between England and Argentina.

The atmosphere was lively, with colorful balloon towers framing the projection screen, creating a festive spirit in a location often associated with overcrowding and violence. The correctional facility has hosted these watch parties since the tournament began, offering them as incentives for inmates demonstrating good behavior, specifically those who have been incident-free for at least 30 days.

Mayor Mamdani arrived just before kickoff, dressed in a dark suit jacket and rolled-up sleeves of his white dress shirt. He quickly engaged with the inmates about the tournament. One inmate expressed his belief that Argentina would triumph over England, while Mamdani, a self-identified fan of Morocco, acknowledged the unpredictability of the matches.

The mayor also took a moment to connect personally with the inmates, congratulating one who shared he would be going home later that day.

This initiative is part of a broader effort, with 90 events held so far, allowing approximately 4,500 of the 6,600 inmates at Rikers to participate in these social gatherings, which aim to foster a sense of community and positive behavior.
