Speaking from the team’s training base in Oakland, he shared, “It’s crazy to score, to get the win. I mean, you couldn’t ask for a better start, could you?” This victory marked a significant milestone just 22 hours after the match in Vancouver.

The players faced the challenge of recovery after a late-night journey. They left BC Place post-midnight, headed straight for Vancouver airport for a flight that departed after 2am, arriving back at their rooms around 5am. Metcalfe admitted, “The game was pretty late in general and usually after games I struggle to sleep.”

Looking ahead, the squad prepares for a challenging match against the United States on Friday in Seattle (Saturday AEST), while prioritizing recovery. Metcalfe noted, “I had about four or five hours of sleep, I’m just pretty knackered... I need a good day off tomorrow.” His pivotal 75th-minute goal secured what many consider the Socceroos' greatest World Cup victory.

The team, featuring a youthful starting line-up averaging 24 years old, showcased impressive talent. Defender Cam Burgess emphasized the importance of experienced players guiding the younger ones, stating, “Those guys are on a good trajectory in their careers.”

During training, Aiden O’Neill was observed as “a little bit sore,” while others engaged in lighter drills. Metcalfe expressed his determination to stay on the field, saying, “I was looking over at the bench waiting for a sub, but I stuck out there and just had to dig deep.”

Burgess highlighted the need for mental recovery, emphasizing the team’s grounded approach.
