England manager Thomas Tuchel has stood by his decision to adopt a more defensive strategy during the World Cup semi-final against Argentina, despite facing heavy criticism following the team's 2-1 defeat.

The match started positively for England, with Anthony Gordon scoring and giving them an early lead. However, Tuchel made several substitutions and altered the team's formation, opting for a defensive approach even with ample time left in the game. This decision allowed Argentina to regain control, ultimately securing their spot in the final against Spain.

In his post-match comments, Tuchel expressed no regrets about his tactics, emphasizing that he acted based on his analysis of the game. “I analysed the match and I did it a certain way so that’s my responsibility,” he stated. He praised his team for their effort, asserting, “We were very, very close. We deserved to be up 1-0.”

Dan Burn, the England defender, echoed Tuchel's sentiments, acknowledging that the team initially executed the game plan effectively. However, he noted that after scoring, they became passive, leading to their downfall. Burn reflected, “We probably conceded too many chances... When you get that close to the World Cup final, that hurts.”
