ROME -- An unforgettable night unfolded at the Stadio Olimpico as AS Roma faced off against Real Madrid, resulting in a dramatic 4-3 win for the Spanish giants. The match took a wild turn in the second half, with Roma initially leading 3-1 until the 83rd minute, only to concede three goals in the final seven minutes, courtesy of Carlos Espi, Endrick, and Toni Rudiger.

Fans of AS Roma left the stadium chanting softly, marking their first match back at the Stadio Olimpico in seven years of European competition. In stark contrast, Jose Mourinho reveled in his victory, celebrated as a hero by former fans. This win stands as a significant statement for Mourinho, who strategically replaced key players like Vinicius Jr. and Denzel Dumfries in the second half, securing a memorable comeback.

Gian Piero Gasperini, the current AS Roma coach, faced scrutiny following this loss, which came on the heels of a disappointing defeat against Atalanta in January 2024 that led to Mourinho's sacking. Despite Gasperini's promising tenure, this match underscored that Roma still has a way to go before competing with Europe’s elite.

The match began with Mourinho showing humility, speaking kindly of his former team. The pre-match atmosphere was electric, with the crowd applauding him as he was introduced. Banners honoring his contributions to Roma adorned the stands, reflecting the deep bond he shares with the fans.

Initially, it appeared that Roma would claim victory, with goals from Marten De Roon and a brace from Danyell Malen. However, Real Madrid's late surge exemplified their resilience and quality. For Mourinho, this match was not just a victory but a poignant homecoming, solidifying his everlasting connection with the Roma fans, who continue to cherish him despite the passage of time.
