The incident ignited when Cousins reacted to Crosby hitting him on the arm twice during a team drill. Following the second hit, Cousins confronted Crosby, grabbing his jersey, which escalated the situation until teammates intervened.

Crosby had previously acknowledged being warned by the coaching staff about the importance of avoiding contact with quarterbacks during practice. Reflecting on his aggressive playing style, he stated, "When you get out there and bullets are flying, I'm not thinking about not finishing the play. That's just not in my nature."

Raiders coach Klint Kubiak downplayed the incident, emphasizing that both players are leaders within the team. He noted, "Obviously, fighting in a game [or] you throw a punch in a game, you are out of the game. So we got to be smart."

Cousins' actions during the practice highlighted his competitive spirit, potentially serving as a motivating force for a Raiders offense that struggled throughout the 2025 season. Teammate Michael Mayer commented on Cousins' intensity, saying, "You want him to defend your team. He's always had that edge since the first day I met him."

This altercation was one of two that occurred during the practice, with Mayer suggesting that such energy could be beneficial for a franchise eager to reclaim its former glory. "We don't want to be throwing punches, but I think on any padded day of camp there's going to be some scuffles."
