This marks the third consecutive year the NFL has chosen not to hold the event, primarily due to concerns surrounding Sorsby's gambling history, which has made him a controversial figure.

The NFL's decision came after Sorsby checked into rehab for a sports gambling addiction earlier this spring, following his transfer from Indiana to Texas Tech. His past actions, including betting on his own games while at Indiana, raised alarms for both the NCAA and NFL. Although Sorsby was granted an injunction against the NCAA's ineligibility ruling, he opted to pursue a professional career instead.

In a letter from Larry Ferazani of the NFL management council, the league cited significant issues with Sorsby's application, stating:

• He did not take accountability for his actions.
• His attempts to circumvent the NCAA's ruling raised concerns about adherence to the NFL's integrity policies.

Sorsby's attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, criticized the NFL's ruling as a violation of the CBA and announced intentions to challenge the decision with the NFLPA. With a return to Texas Tech appearing unlikely due to public backlash, Sorsby finds himself with limited options for the 2026 season. He cannot sign as a free agent and may need to explore playing in another professional league, though he remains eligible for the 2027 NFL Draft.
