The 2026-27 season is set to introduce a series of groundbreaking laws aimed at reducing tempo disruption in football. These rules, initially trialed at the World Cup, aim to enhance the pace of the game and minimize stoppage time, despite causing some confusion during the recent Carabao Cup matches.

From the Community Shield match between Arsenal and Manchester City to the Premier League and local leagues, these changes will be broadly implemented, excluding the use of VAR.

Key changes include:

• Delaying the Restart: Players must avoid tactics that disrupt play. Referees will count down from five seconds if players delay the restart, with the opposing team awarded a throw if the countdown expires.
• Substitutions: Players have 10 seconds to exit the field, and failure to comply results in a one-minute wait for the substitute to enter, leaving teams potentially down to 10 players.
• Injury Protocol: Players stopping the game must leave for at least one minute, with some exemptions if they are genuinely injured.
• Goalkeeper Tactical Timeout: If a goalkeeper requests treatment, an outfield player must leave for one minute, preventing tactical delays.
