The 2026 college football season opener between NC State and Virginia has been relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, as announced on Wednesday. Initially set to take place at Nilton Santos Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the game will now be hosted by the Cavaliers, who were the designated home team.

The decision to move the game came after Athlete Advantage informed the ACC that the event could not proceed as planned. This change also coincides with a recent vote by ACC athletic directors to transition to a nine-game conference schedule starting in 2026, converting the matchup from a nonconference game to an official ACC contest, which will now count towards league standings.

College Football's International Expansion

International games are not new to college football, with historical matches played in Canada, Mexico, and Cuba since 1874. Notable events include:

• Boston College vs. Army in Dublin, Ireland in 1988, the first major American college football game in Europe.
• Recent games in Dublin have attracted crowds exceeding 40,000, with Pitt and Wisconsin scheduled to play there on Aug. 29 this year.
• Arizona State and Kansas are set to clash at Wembley Stadium in London on Sept. 19.

The planned game in Brazil represented a significant branding opportunity for both NC State and Virginia, potentially elevating their visibility in a sport that values exposure. Despite this setback, the pursuit of international growth in college football is expected to continue in the coming years.
