Following the early game, the traditional prime-time doubleheader includes the 76ers facing the Knicks and the Thunder taking on the Spurs.

The early matchup is notable as it breaks the league's trend of scheduling weekday matinees, typically reserved for international games or holidays. Last season, the Celtics and Pistons finished 1-2 in the Eastern Conference but fell short in the playoffs. The Pistons opened as -2.5 favorites against Boston, while the Celtics made headlines by trading Jaylen Brown to the 76ers for Paul George and draft picks, significantly shifting the league's dynamics.

In the evening's highlight, the defending champion Knicks will celebrate their 53-year title drought by raising a championship banner before their game against LeBron James and the revamped 76ers at 7 p.m. ET. New York is favored at +330 to repeat as Eastern Conference champions, with Philadelphia close behind at +350. However, the 76ers have seen a surge in betting action since the LeBron trade, dropping from +750 to +3.5 underdogs for the opening game.

Adding to the excitement, Philadelphia's home opener is set for Oct. 22 against Cleveland, while the Sixers will also face the Lakers on Christmas Day. In another key matchup, San Antonio opens at -1.5 against the Thunder in a rematch of last season's Western Conference Finals.

Other confirmed openers for Oct. 21 include Timberwolves at Heat and Warriors at Lakers. The NBA Cup schedule is expected to be released soon, with the championship game moving to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
