Astros' Plans

Houston Astros General Manager Dana Brown revealed that the team aims to acquire a left-handed hitting outfielder. Currently, the Astros have the fewest plate appearances from left-handed hitters in the league, totaling only 906, with Yordan Alvarez contributing 402 of those. The rest are comprised mainly of bench players and journeymen.

Earlier this year, the Astros made a significant move by trading lefty-hitting outfielder Jesús Sánchez to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for Joey Loperfido, a cost-saving decision. While Sánchez is performing well with a batting line of .274/.316/.437, Loperfido has struggled with injuries and effectiveness this season.

Cubs' Approach

On the other hand, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell emphasized that the team’s priority lies in enhancing their pitching staff, regardless of whether it involves starters or relievers. Currently, the Cubs have a staggering 13-man pitching staff on the injured list, including notable names like Justin Steele and Jameson Taillon.

Taillon recently made a minor-league rehab start, throwing 3 ⅓ innings and 45 pitches, and is expected to return to the rotation post All-Star break. His contribution, even with an abbreviated pitch count, is crucial given the team's injury woes, as the Cubs would prefer 60 or more pitches from him over their current options.
