Mikel Arteta has firmly established a pattern of impactful substitutions at Arsenal, significantly influencing their Premier League performances this season. After a tense match against Nottingham Forest on October 1, 2023, where the game seemed destined for a goalless draw, Noni Madueke emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal shortly after his half-time introduction, securing a crucial 1-0 victory.

This trend is not an isolated incident; in their last three Premier League wins, all came from goals scored by substitutes:

• Bruno Guimarães against Sunderland (2-0)
• Bruno Guimarães against Leeds (2-1)
• Noni Madueke against Nottingham Forest (1-0)

Remarkably, these substitute goals represent all the goals scored by Arsenal’s substitutes this season, showcasing their critical role in tight matches. With three winning goals already, Arsenal’s substitutes are on track to challenge the Premier League record of six winning goals in a season.

Since Arteta's appointment in December 2019, Arsenal has outperformed all other teams in terms of winning goals scored by substitutes. Over the past two seasons, 13 different Arsenal substitutes have either scored or assisted a goal, highlighting the squad depth that Arteta has cultivated.

Arteta's swift decision-making is another cornerstone of his management style. This season, he has made four half-time substitutions, second only to Brentford and Aston Villa. His proactive approach, illustrated by his average timing of 50.2 minutes for first substitutions, has often turned the tide in matches.

In the grand scheme of Premier League history, Arteta ranks among the top managers for the proportion of goals contributed by substitutes, with 12.6% of Arsenal’s goals coming from bench players. This statistic underscores his adeptness not just in squad depth but also in strategic game management. With these tactics, Arteta may well hold the key to Arsenal’s ambitions for the Premier League title this season.
