The college basketball coaching carousel continues to spin, even amidst the 2026 NBA Draft excitement. In a surprising move, Dusty May left Michigan just three months after leading the team to a national title, accepting the head coaching position with the Dallas Mavericks.

With May's departure, Michigan quickly promoted assistant coach Mike Boynton Jr. to interim head coach. Less than three weeks later, Boynton received a two-year contract, officially removing the interim title.

In an exclusive interview with CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein on Inside College Basketball Now, Boynton shared insights about his initial discussions with Michigan's administration following May's exit. He emphasized the importance of maintaining team cohesion, stating, "Most importantly for me was getting these players on this team... to understand they still had a great opportunity in front of them."

Boynton described the first few days as overwhelming, filled with numerous conversations with players, their families, and agents. He noted the challenge of keeping the roster intact while building his coaching staff. Despite losing LJ Cason to a transfer to Miami due to an ACL injury, Michigan retained most of its key players from the previous season.

The Wolverines remain strong contenders for another national title, bolstered by a mix of returning talent and promising newcomers. Key players include Elliot Cadeau, the Final Four Most Outstanding Player, and Trey McKenney, who is expected to fill the starting shooting guard position.

Boynton credited both Cadeau and McKenney for their sacrifices last season, stating, "Elliot Cadeau's handprints were all over the NBA Draft... There will be a lot more attention on those guys creating more offense." The team aims to build on its recent success as it prepares for the upcoming season.
