As Michael McArdle prepares for the World Cup play-off against Portugal, he embodies a mix of excitement and realism in his new role as Northern Ireland's manager. Since taking over in March, McArdle has drawn from over 25 years of football experience, focusing on the monumental challenge ahead: securing a spot in the World Cup.

His deep-rooted passion for family shines through, not only in his personal life but also in how he views the team. McArdle, who still resides in his hometown of Moodiesburn, emphasizes the importance of family within the squad, stating, "Family's crucial to me. We're all a family when we represent the country."

Facing Portugal over two legs, McArdle acknowledges the hurdles, including potential matches against Croatia or Iceland. Despite previous losses to these teams, he encourages his squad to dream big, believing that the aspiration to compete at the highest level is vital.

McArdle's coaching journey includes roles such as head of elite women's football at the Scottish FA. His current squad, while young and impacted by injuries, reflects his long-term vision for Northern Ireland football. He values building relationships with players and coaches, emphasizing the community aspect of the sport.

The absence of captain Simone Magill due to injury is felt, but her presence with her newborn daughter during the camp symbolizes the family atmosphere McArdle aims to foster.

Ultimately, McArdle’s upbringing in Moodiesburn instilled in him a commitment to care for others, reinforcing his belief in the power of family as both a personal and professional foundation. He cherishes moments spent with his own family, finding balance amid the pressures of management.
