The four-time Formula One world champion had been dominating the race on Sunday morning, leading by over half a minute while sharing a Mercedes AMG GT3 with seasoned racers Lucas Auer, Jules Gounon, and Dani Juncadella.

As Juncadella took over from Verstappen, he encountered an issue with the rear-right part of the car, leading to a loss of the lead and a necessary pit stop. Unfortunately, the car did not return to the track after spending an hour in the garage.

This race took place just a week before F1 resumes at the Canadian Grand Prix and marked a significant personal project for Verstappen, who is a passionate racing fan. He has expressed concerns about his future in F1 due to the upcoming 2026 cars' heavy reliance on electrical power. In response to drivers' criticism, F1 has committed to engine changes for the 2027 season.

Verstappen showcased his trademark aggressive driving style during his first stint on Saturday evening, dramatically moving from 10th to the lead with a series of overtakes. He faced challenges, including a near-miss with a barrier after losing grip over a bump and engaging in a fierce battle for the overnight lead.

Familiar with the Nürburgring from previous shorter races and virtual simulations, this was still a unique challenge for Verstappen. He navigated a 15.8-mile circuit filled with 161 cars, managing varying weather conditions and the difficulties of night-time endurance racing without the extensive lighting used in F1.
