Max Verstappen expressed disappointment over Red Bull Racing’s strategy that potentially cost him the chance to secure a win against George Russell at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. After battling with Lewis Hamilton, Verstappen was just one second behind Russell before the pivotal pit stop phase.

Mercedes opted to pit Russell first with 28 laps remaining, which forced Red Bull to extend Verstappen's stint. He eventually pitted with 22 laps to go, aiming for a tyre advantage for the final stretch. Despite finishing just 1.6 seconds behind Russell after starting with an 11-second deficit post-pit stop, Verstappen remained optimistic about the team's performance.

In a post-race interview, he stated, "In hindsight, it's easier to say that but we will look back at it. It was still going to be a long stint on the tyres, but at the same time, my degradation was a bit better than George, so I’m pretty confident I could have kept him behind."

The team had introduced a significant upgrade package, which appeared to enhance the car's performance. Verstappen noted that prior to this race, he had only secured one podium finish, a third place at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Looking ahead, he commented on the upcoming race at Silverstone, mentioning the need for effective battery management and expressing hope for similar performance on a different track layout.

Laurent Mekies, Red Bull’s team principal, acknowledged the improvements, stating, "The most satisfying element was the pace... we had the pace to be very close to have enough to win." He also emphasized the challenges ahead as competitors continue to bring updates throughout the long season.
