Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, at 38, hints at a potential future in the NFL beyond 40, as he navigates the challenges of aging in a sport often dominated by younger players. Coming off an outstanding MVP season, Stafford has dismissed retirement rumors, stating he aims to play at least through 2026.

In his recent comments on Chris Long's podcast, Green Light, Stafford emphasized a year-to-year approach to his career. He aims to assess his mental, physical, and emotional readiness each season, along with his family's input. He explained:

"It is year-to-year because I think it's fair to the team, I think it's fair to me, my family... committing to more than that feels a little bit daunting."

This offseason, Stafford signed a contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams through 2027, when he will be 39. If the Rams reach the Super Bowl that season, he could potentially play at 40.

To prepare for the future, Stafford has consulted with legends Tom Brady and Drew Brees, who both played into their 40s. Notably, Brees encouraged Stafford by suggesting that his best years might still lie ahead:

"Drew was like, 'You might have your best five years of your career coming up.'"

Stafford acknowledged the pressure of maintaining performance in a league that often favors younger athletes but expressed a renewed motivation from Brees' words. He remains focused on the upcoming season, stating:

"I know I'm excited about playing this year and then we'll see after that."

Last season, Stafford led the league with 4,707 passing yards and recorded 46 touchdowns against only eight interceptions, proving he still has the capability to compete at the highest level.
