Before the Vuelta a Espana, many would have predicted Tadej Pogacar to dominate, but it was Matthew Brennan who surprised everyone by winning five stages in his Grand Tour debut. At just 21 years old, Brennan made history, becoming the youngest rider to achieve this feat and the second British rider to win four or more stages in a single three-week race, following the legendary Mark Cavendish.

Brennan's victories showcased his versatility, triumphing on various terrains and in different race conditions, from flat stages to challenging uphill climbs. Entering the race as a favorite, he handled the pressure with remarkable poise, demonstrating that he is not just a sprinter but a rider capable of competing across multiple race types.

His success has drawn comparisons to Cavendish, though their physical attributes differ significantly. Both share an unyielding mental toughness and a fierce desire to win. Brennan's outspoken nature shone through when he criticized the UCI for allowing racing in extreme heat, asserting the importance of voicing the peloton's concerns.

While some may downplay his achievements due to the absence of top-tier sprinters, Brennan's performance over 3,275km and 58,000m of elevation gain was a testament to his endurance and skill. He achieved a 100% conversion rate on his targeted stages, solidifying his place within Visma's future plans, especially with the 2027 Tour de France on the horizon.

Brennan's triumphs signal a shift in British cycling, as the younger generation, including Oscar Onley, who finished sixth in his debut Vuelta, begins to rise. With a record 49 British riders in the WorldTour this season, the legacy of grand tour winners like Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome is being passed on to the next wave of talent.
