Sussex Cricket has appointed Matt Walker as their new head coach for the 2027 season, succeeding Paul Farbrace, who will transition to the role of Sussex's new Director of Cricket. Walker, 52, will officially take charge on 1 November.

Walker brings a wealth of experience from his eight seasons at Kent, where he achieved significant milestones including:

• Promotion to Division One in 2018
• Winning the T20 Blast in 2021
• Securing the One-Day Cup in 2022

In addition to his tenure at Kent, Walker has experience coaching within the England men's set-up and currently serves as the batting coach at Warwickshire and assistant coach with MI London in The Hundred.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Walker stated, "Sussex is a club I have always admired and one with a proud history. The opportunity to work with this group of players and staff, alongside Paul, was one that really excited me."

Farbrace praised Walker for his "experience, energy, and enthusiasm," emphasizing the importance of collaboration as they tackle future challenges.

Sussex recently returned to Division One as champions in 2024 but faced difficulties in 2026 with a 12-point deduction due to financial issues. Moving forward, Walker and new chairman Ed Warner will navigate tight financial restrictions, including a player salary cap until 2028 and the need for a three-year business plan.

Mark West, interim CEO, highlighted Walker's appointment as a crucial step in overcoming recent challenges and strengthening the club, stating, "He is joining a talented group of players and staff, and we believe he is the right person to help drive the next phase of our cricket programme."

As Walker prepares to lead Sussex, he faces the task of building a competitive team while addressing the financial constraints ahead.
