The club's removal from the upcoming Wembley final against Hull City, with Middlesbrough stepping in as the beaten semi-finalists, follows Southampton's admission of spying on Boro prior to the first leg. This admission, coupled with multiple breaches of EFL regulations, resulted in a severe ruling from the independent disciplinary commission.

Phil Parsons, the chief executive, has publicly apologized for the club's actions but condemned the severity of the sanction. He described the punishment as "manifestly disproportionate to every previous sanction in the history of the English game," a sentiment shared by Le Tissier.

Le Tissier expressed his disbelief to The Sun, stating:

The punishment feels a bit disproportionate. It feels like you’ve been put on trial for murder when all you’ve done is stolen a Mars bar from the corner shop.

While acknowledging the club's wrongdoing, he emphasized the shock at the punishment's disproportionate nature.

Former England internationals Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer also voiced their surprise on The Rest is Football podcast. Lineker remarked, "I’m not sure the crime warrants this punishment," suggesting a substantial fine would have sufficed. Shearer echoed this sentiment, recalling the Marcelo Bielsa 'spygate' incident at Leeds United, which resulted in a fine rather than expulsion.

Shearer noted Middlesbrough's strong pursuit of the case, stating, "I know Middlesbrough went full-in in terms of going after Southampton."
