Tottenham Hotspur has ramped up their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, the West Ham midfielder, as they seek to strengthen their central midfield following a failed attempt to sign Sandro Tonali.

The 21-year-old Fernandes has emerged as a primary target for Spurs, with discussions reportedly progressing positively. Sources indicate that Tottenham is optimistic about reaching an agreement soon.

West Ham is believed to be seeking around £80 million for the Portugal international, who has drawn interest from other top clubs, including Manchester United and Paris St-Germain.

Tottenham's previous bid for Tonali, an Italy international, was rejected by Newcastle United, with the offer also hovering around £80 million. Spurs' head coach Roberto de Zerbi has long admired Tonali, who recently signed a new deal with Newcastle, reaffirming his commitment to the club after serving a 10-month ban for breaching the Football Association's betting rules.

This summer, Tottenham has made a swift start in the transfer market, already securing four new signings. Earlier on Wednesday, they finalized a deal to bring in goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer once his contract with Burnley concludes on 1 July.
